UCLA Computers Hacked The University of California at Los Angeles was hit by one of the biggest security breaches to ever occur at an educational institute. As the FBI began to investigate the security break over eight hundred thousand students, faculty and staff were notified that their private data may have been stolen from computes on the campus. The hack of campus computers ended when a technician noted suspicious activity on a server that housed information on Social Security numbers and other personal information. It is believed that a subtle vulnerability in the system was exploited by an expert hacker. What has increased the risk of this computer hacking is the fact that the intrusion went unnoticed for several months, providing the hacker with time to process the personal information he or she gathered. While the FBI investigation found that some Social Security numbers were obtained there has been no evidence that the information has been misused in any way. The college immediately set up a website and toll free call center for those who had questions about the incident or believed their personal information had been misused. Many privacy advocates acknowledged the actions taken by the college in notifying those in the database. The college quickly emailed and notified everyone in the database who may have had personal information stolen. They also efficiently handled any reported cases of misuse of information. |
