Ex Employee Charged With Hacking Company System. A former executive of Source Media Inc. was charged with one count of unauthorized access to a protected computer network. The U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan in a press release said that Stevan Hoffacker, the one-time director of information technology and later vice president of technology of Source Media Inc. faces up to five years in prison, on the charge of unauthorized access to a protected computer network. Source Media is a unit of Bahrain's Investcorp, based in New York it is the publisher of American Banker, the Bond Buyer and other financial publications. Hoffacker, 53 was arrested Wednesday in Queens, where he lives and now faces up to five years in prison, for hacking into Source Media Inc. network. According to the court he had earlier worked with the company and therefore was privy to the usernames and passwords of other employees during his work in the company's information technology department. Three years after he was dismissed, he hacked into the company's ema il account and tipped of employees whoso jobs were in jeopardy. He sent mails to two Source Media employees in august and September this year alerting them that they might lose their jobs. According to court documents these messages were sent from a Yahoo account. The two employees had been the subject of emails. Their employment status and termination were discussed among the executives of Source Media Inc. Hoffacker after hacking into the email account of the company had viewed these mails and later sent mails to the two employees tipping them off on their possible sacking. According to the prosecutors and filed court documents the company was forced to retain the services of an outside law firm. The company also faced loss as it had to redirect personnel to address the security breach. They company has quoted a damage of more than $ 100,000. A lawyer for Haoffacker did not immediately return the call when sought of comment late on Wednesday. Hoffacker had apparently worked for Sou rce Media and its predecessor company from 1998 to 2003. |
